Fuel pellets come in many different forms. The
most well known form are premium wood pellets used in domestic
pellet stoves and boilers. However there are many different raw
materials which can produce fuel pellets in many different grades
for different uses.
Domestic Heating Fuel Pellets
Most domestic pellet stoves and boilers are
designed to burn only premium grade wood fuel pellets. Typically
these fuel pellets are produced from softwoods and hardwoods. The
ash content of these fuel pellets are very low at only 0.5%. They
are also the most expensive form of fuel pellets.
Lower Grade Wood Pellets Used In Domestic
Pellet Stoves, Boilers and Furnaces
There are other grades of fuel pellets used in
the domestic market, these are referred to as standard grade wood
pellets. These pellets will produce a slightly higher ash content
and lower heat value. Standard grade wood pellets therefore demand
and lower price point.
Biomass Fuel Pellets Such As Switchgrass and
Hemp Pellets Are The Future
There is simply not enough wood waste to possibly
support the fuel pellet market into the future as demand will
significantly increase. Therefore other biomass materials will have
to be used to produce fuel pellets, promising examples been
switchgrass and hemp.
Fuel Pellet Qualities Such As Heat Value, Ash
Content, Clinkers and Corrosion
Not all fuel pellets produce the same combustion
results, therefore not all pellet stoves and boilers can use
standard grade wood pellets or biomass pellets. So while these
materials are more abundant the market for fuel pellets produced
from these materials is smaller. However biomass fuel pellets are
where the future of the pellet fuel market lies.
