I have my main article on the best value pellets for smoking/grilling. This article is to specifically cover the best-value Hickory pellets currently on the market for grilling/smoking. Hickory pellets are well suited to beef, pork and poultry. However, some pellets you can buy are Hickory blended pellets (some Oak in there), while others are 100% Hickory pellets. Therefore, I’ve separated the two types of Hickory pellets below and ordered the best value brands. Enjoy 🙂

Best Value Hickory Blended Pellets – Ordered Cheapest Per Lb
So the first pellets I’ve included below are Hickory blended pellets. Hence, there will be a percentage of Hickory pellets within the bag, typically 30%, and the rest will be typically Oak pellets.
Any brand which does not specifically state their pellets are made from 100% Hickory, I’ve included them in the list below as Hickory blended pellets.
As pellet bag sizes change (some are 20 lbs, some are 40 lbs), I focus on the price per lb, not per bag. This is an important distinction to make when looking to buy the best-value pellets.
The order of the different brands of Hickory blended pellets below is the cheapest per lb first. However, prices can obviously change, but I’ll do my best to update this article over time.
Bear Mountain Hickory Pellets – 43 Cents to $1.10 Per Lb
Based in Colorado, Bear Mountain BBQ has been producing a range of hardwood pellets for grills/smokers since 1990.
The product description states they are blended pellets. Therefore, its likely a Hickory pellet and Oak pellet blend. However, the percentages are not stated.
While Bear Mountain pellets are available in 20 lb bags, they are better value in the larger 40 lb bags.
Availability is good, with Amazon ($31) and Lowes ($17.50) selling the 40 lb bags. Home Depot ($22) and Academy Sports ($10) stock the 20 lb bags. Therefore, Lowes is currently the best value.
On a price per lb basis, these Bear Mountain Hickory pellets range from 43 Cents up to $1.10.
- Typical Price Per lb: 43 Cents to $1.10
- Bag Size: 20 lb & 40 lb
- Availability: Amazon.com, HomeDepot.com, Lowes.com & Academy.com
Pit Boss Hickory Pellets – 45 Cents to 60 Cents Per Lb
Outside of Traeger, Pit Boss is one of the most well-known brands in the pellet grill/smoker space. Models such as the Sportsmans and Navigator serving as popular budget pellet grills.
Pit Boss also offer a wide range of pellets, in this case, Hickory pellets which are blended pellets. However, its not stated what the exact blend is or the percentage of the various hardwoods.
The good thing with Pit Boss pellets is they are widely available. You can get them at their best value, typically in 40 lb bags, directly from Pit Boss ($20) and also from Amazon ($21).
You also have outlets such as Walmart ($9) and Lowes ($12) selling these Pit Boss Hickory pellets in smaller 20 lb bags.
The price per lb for these Pit Boss Hickory pellets works out between 45 Cents to 60 Cents per lb.
- Typical Price Per lb: 45 Cents to 60 Cents
- Bag Size: 20 lbs and 40 lbs
- Availability: PitBoss-Grills.com, Amazon.com, Walmart.com & Lowes.com
Camp Chef Hickory Pellets – 65 Cents to $1.10 Per Lb
Camp Chef produce established models, such as SmokePro and Woodwind, and they are also producing some of the most innovative products, such as the Apex and Woodwind Pro.
In terms of their pellets, these Camp Chef Hickory pellets are blended pellets. However, Camp Chef doesn’t state the mixture/percentages of their ‘proprietary’ pellets, which is a bit disappointing.
The good thing about these Hickory pellets is that they are widely available. You can get them directly from Camp Chef ($17), but also from Amazon ($17), Home Depot ($17), Lowes ($13) and Walmart ($22).
Therefore, the price per lb for these Camp Chef Hickory pellets ranges from 65 Cents up to $1.10.
- Typical Price Per lb: 65 Cents to $1.10
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: CampChef.com, Amazon.com, HomeDepot.com, Lowes.com & Walmart.com
Fire & Flavor Hickory Pellets – 90 Cents Per Lb
To be honest, I know very little about the brand Fire & Flavor. I just came across them one day while browsing the Home Depot website.
Going to the brand’s website, I’ve been unable to find out any more details either, such as where these pellets are made. Though they do appear to be blended pellets, not 100% Hickory.
In terms of availability, I’ve only currently found these pellets for sale at Home Depot, with a price of just over $18 for a 20 lb bag. Therefore, the price per lb works out as 90 Cents.
- Typical Price Per lb: 90 Cents
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: HomeDepot.com
Oklahoma Joe’s Hickory Pellets – 95 Cents Per Lb
The Oklahoma Joe’s brand offers a range of pellet grills under the Rider name, which is currently in its second generation.
They also offer their own branded pellets. In the case of their Hickory pellets, they are specifically stated to be a blend of Hickory and Oak pellets, but the percentages are not provided.
I’ve only found these pellets for sale in 20 lb bags over at Amazon ($19). Therefore, the price per lb works out slightly under a dollar at 95 Cents per lb.
- Typical Price Per lb: 95 Cents
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: Amazon.com
Weber SmokeFire Hickory Pellets – 95 Cents Per Lb
When to comes to ‘pellet grills’, the Weber SmokeFire is one of the best models on the market. Though Weber needs to work on making their products better pellet smokers though.
Anyway, Weber is obviously pretty much the biggest brand in BBQ. As such, they were not going to miss a trick and not sell their own branded pellets.
The Weber SmokeFire Hickory pellets are blended pellets, and Weber helpfully states the percentages. These pellets are made up of 40% Hickory pellets and 60% Oak pellets.
The availability of these pellets is pretty good. You can get 20 lb bags through Amazon ($19), Walmart ($33), Lowes ($19) and BBQGuys ($19).
Besides the oddly high price from Walmart, the typical price per bag of $19 works out at slightly less than a dollar per lb, at 95 Cents per lb.
- Typical Price Per lb: 95 Cents
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Lowes.com & BBQGuys.com
Z Grills Hickory Pellets – 95 Cents to $1.50 Per Lb
Z Grills is a well know brand of budget/low-cost pellet grills/smokers. They also sell their own branded pellets, including their own Hickory branded pellets.
Though I cannot confirm this to be the case, it would appear by the product description these Z Grills Hickory pellets are a blend of Hickory and some other Hardwood, probably Oak.
In terms of availability, you can get them in 20 lb bags directly from Z Grills ($30). However, they are also stocked at Amazon ($19) for a much better price.
Therefore, the price per lb for these Z Grills Hickory pellets ranges from 95 Cents to $1.50.
- Typical Price Per lb: 95 Cents to $1.50
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: ZGrills.com & Amazon.com
BBQGuys Hickory Pellets – $1 Per Lb
If you have browsed any of my other pellet grill/smoker articles, you have probably come across a BBQGuys.com link or two. The reason is they are not one of the largest online BBQ retailers.
Therefore, they have now decided to offer their own branded pellets. Their Hickory pellets are blended pellets, and they do state that 60% of the bag is Oak pellets, so 40% are Hickory pellets.
These pellets in 20 lb bags currently appear to only be available directly from BBQGuys ($20), which is not too surprising.
Therefore, the price per lb for these pellets is $1 per lb.
- Typical Price Per lb: $1
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: BBQGuys.com
Traeger Hickory Pellets – $1 Per Lb
You may want to check out my Traeger pellets review, where I discuss a blind taste test, a Traeger patent, and a lawsuit that was submitted against Traeger about how their pellets are made.
As I discuss in my linked article on how Traeger wood pellets are made, Traeger does state in their promotional video that their pellets are blended. Hence, these are not 100% Hickory.
Traeger pellets are some of the most widely available. Either directly from Traeger, Amazon, Home Depot, BBQGuys or Walmart.
More than any other brand, Traeger pellets are priced pretty consistently across various retailers. Therefore, the price per lb works out at $1 per lb in pretty much all cases.
- Typical Price Per lb: $1
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: Traeger.com, Amazon.com, HomeDepot.com, BBQGuys.com & Walmart.com
BBQr’s Delight Hickory Pellets – $1.25 to $1.50 Per Lb
These BBQr’s Delight Hickory pellets are blended pellets. As the product description states, ‘Premium Oak Mixed with Flavorwood’. However, the percentages are not stated.
It’s likely the percentages are around 75% Oak pellets and then 25% Hickory pellets, and they come in 20 lb bags.
The availability of these pellets is not as wide as several of the other brands listed in this post. You can pick them up from Amazon ($30), Walmart ($27) and Big Poppa Smokers ($25).
Therefore, the price per lb for these blended Hickory pellets is between $1.25 and $1.50.
- Typical Price Per lb: $1.25 to $1.50
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: Amazon.com, Walmart.com & BigPoppaSmokers.com
Myron Mixon Hickory Pellets – $1.40 Per Lb
Myron Mixon has won various BBQ competitions dating back to 1996. Myron also sells his own range of pellet smokers under the BARQ branding.
The Hickory pellets sold by Myron Mixon state they are ‘100% Hardwood’. However, they do not state they are 100% Hickory. Therefore, I’m led to believe these are Hickory blended pellets.
At this point in time, I’ve only found these pellets 20 lbs of pellets for sale at Amazon ($28) and Home Depot ($28). Therefore the price per lb works out at $1.40.
- Typical Price Per lb: $1.40
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: Amazon.com & HomeDepot.com
Mr. Bar-B-Q Hickory Pellets – $1.95 Per Lb
The Mr Bar-B-Q brand has been around since the 1970s and is another example of a charcoal brand now offering its own line of pellets.
It’s not clear if these pellets are blended pellets or not, but with the product description only stating ‘100% natural hardwoods‘, it means these could very well be Hickory/Oak blended pellets.
In terms of availability, I’ve only currently found these pellets in 20 lb bags available through Amazon at a price of $39. That’s a price per lb of $1.95, which is very high, even if they were 100% Hickory.
- Typical Price Per lb: $1.95
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: Amazon.com
Best Value 100% Hickory Pellets – Ordered Cheapest Per Lb
Now, as the brands below are offering 100% Hickory pellets that are not blended with Oak pellets, you should typically expect a higher price per lb. But’s that not always the case.
If you are looking for the strongest hit of Hickory smoke/flavour in your smoked beef brisket or pork, for instance, then you may want to choose some 100% Hickory pellets.
B&B 100% Hickory Pellets – 50 Cents Per Lb
You have probably seen bags of B&B charcoal at your local store, and they have been producing charcoal since 1961. Well, B&B are now in the pellet game too, and their prices are looking good.
Availability is thin on the ground at the moment. For instance, I can only currently find these B&B Hickory pellets at Academy Sports.
However, for 100% Hickory pellets in 20 lb bags for Academy Sports to be selling them for $10, that’s excellent value of just 50 Cents per lb.
- Typical Price Per lb: 50 Cents per lb
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: Academy.com
Broil King 100% Hickory Pellets – 90 Cents to $1 Per Lb
The Broil King pellet grill range is a premium offering. For instance, they are some of the few pellet grills/smokers you can actually get that come with a rotisserie.
Broil King naturally also sells their own branded pellets. What is a little odd is the vast majority of their pellet flavours are blended pellets, apart from their Hickory pellets, which are 100% Hickory wood.
In terms of availability, I’ve found these Broil King 100% Hickory pellets in 20 lb bags at Amazon ($20), Home Depot ($19) and Lowes ($18).
Therefore, the price per lb for these 100% Hickory pellets ranges from 90 Cents to $1.
- Typical Price Per lb: 90 Cents to $1
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: Amazon.com, HomeDepot.com & Lowes.com
Grilla Grills 100% Hickory Pellets – $1 Per LB
You may not be aware of Grilla Grills, but they produce some excellent mid-range pellet grills/smokers. They also produce a modular outdoor stainless steel kitchen which I love to own.
Grilla Grills also offer their own branded pellets, and notably, they offer 100% single wood species pellet, for instance, their Hickory pellets in 20 lb bags.
You can only get Grilla Grills pellets directly from Grilla Grills, just like their pellet grills/smokers. Therefore, they are only available for one price, and that’s $20 for a 20 lb bag, so $1 per lb.
- Typical Price Per lb: $1
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: GrillaGrills.com
Kingsford 100% Hickory Pellets – $1 to $1.10 Per Lb
Kingsford has been selling charcoal since the 1920s, and they have now joined an ever-growing number of brands that want to offer their own BBQ pellets.
These Kingsford Hickory pellets are just that. They are 100% Hickory pellets. There are no Oak or Alder pellets in these 20 lb bags.
In terms of availability, I can find these pellets at Amazon ($22), Walmart ($21), Home Depot ($20) and Lowes ($22).
The pricing is pretty consistent across all retailers, and the price per lb works out between $1 and $1.10.
- Typical Price Per lb: $1 to $1.10
- Bag Size: 20 lbs
- Availability: Amazon.com, HomeDepot.com, Walmart.com & Lowes.com

The availability of these pellets is pretty good. You can pick up bags from Amazon ($41), Home Depot ($43) and Walmart ($47).
Therefore, the price per lb for these 100% Hickory pellets works out between $1.03 and $1.18.
- Typical Price Per lb: $1.03 to $1.18
- Bag Size: 40 lbs
- Availability: Amazon.com, HomeDepot.com & Walmart.com
