While most of the time, you probably want to cook in your backyard. There are likely times when you would like the ability to smoke and grill your food when out and about.

The portable nature of the Camp Chef Pursuit 20 means you can use it pretty much anywhere.
The Camp Chef Pursuit 20 is ideal for taking to a tailgating party or with you on your next trip out in the RV

With its small size and weight, the Pursuit 20 can be taken pretty much anywhere. However, it will still need a source of power and an inverter to convert 12V DC power to 110V AC power.

Being a portable pellet grill, the cooking area of the Pursuit 20 is always going to be small, but in reality, its smaller than many people think due to how the pellet grill is described.

The cooking area on the Camp Chef Pursuit 20 is smaller than most people think it is.
Check out the image above. You’ll see that the main grate is pretty hard to use/access with the top rack in place

The cooking area is marketed as being over 500 sq.in, which is true, with the second upper rack in place. However, in doing so, it makes it very hard to move food around on the lower rack.

Therefore, in reality, if you were to cook on the Camp Chef Pursuit 20, you would probably only use the main grate, the cooking area is then significantly reduced to just 253 sq.in.

The current updated version of the Camp Chef Pursuit 20 benefits from a PID controller offering 5-degree temperature adjustment, a feature not currently found on many portable pellet grills.

The controller on the Camp Chef Pursuit 20 is one of its best features.
The controller fitted to the Pursuit 20 is better than the average control panel fitted to portable pellet grills

Along with precise 5-degree temperature adjustment, the controller also provides a smoke setting of 1 to 10. This is again a feature not commonly found on other portable pellet grills.

There is a version of this same Camp Chef controller that comes with WiFi connectivity and App support. Unfortunately, Camp Chef chose not to fit that version to the Pursuit 20.

Camp Chef chose not to fit their controller with WiFi connectivity to the Pursuit 20.
Its unfortunate that Camp Chef chose not to give the Pursuit 20 WiFi and App functionality

Granted, when it comes to purely grilling your food, and you’re sitting next to the pellet grill, WiFi is pretty pointless. However, when it comes to smoking food over many hours, it comes in handy.

When it comes to grilling and searing foods, despite the cooking area on the main grate not being particularly large, it does have good functionality, with direct-flame access.

The Camp Chef Pursuit 20 benefits from direct-flame access for good grilling/searing performance.
You can flame grill steaks and burgers etc on the Camp Chef Pursuit 20

You simply pull a lever, and slots open up in the grease tray to let the flames of the pellet fire below come up through, providing much higher grate surface temperatures for good grilling.

The typical price point of the Pursuit 20 is around $500 (check our database). At that price point, its possible to get many much larger pellet grills/smokers.

With a price point of around 500 dollars, the Camp Chef Pursuit 20 is quite expensive for its size.
A price point of 500 dollars does seem quite expensive for the size of the Pursuit 20

Yes, the Pursuit 20 is similarly priced to the Traeger Tailgater, for instance, but I would argue that it is another example of a high-priced pellet grill/smoker for its size/features.

My Final Thoughts On The Camp Chef Pursuit 20

When it comes to portable pellet grills, the Camp Chef Pursuit is not a bad option. I like its controller despite the missing WiFi, and I also like the direct-flame access functionality.

However, the main grate is pretty small, and I also think its quite expensive for its size/features. There is now a large range of portable pellet grills. I would encourage you to research/compare via our database through the link below.
