Pros & Cons – Camp Chef Woodwind 36

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

The Woodwind 36 is the bigger brother to the Camp Chef Woodwind 24. These are the latest versions of these particular models that now have a stainless steel cooking chamber. However, the price has also increased along with it. Therefore, let’s discuss its Pros & Cons.

The only real difference between the previous Woodwind 36 and this version is the stainless steel cooking chamber, though it is indeed a notable improvement.

Ideally all pellet grills/smokers would come with a full stainless steel cooking chamber like the Camp Chef Woodwind 36.
A stainless steel cooking chamber is a feature of a premium pellet grill/smoker

With stainless steel, you no longer have to worry about those parts of the grill getting rusty; you can also clean it as hard as you want without having to worry about damaging a paint finish.

When I found out that Camp Chef had updated the Woodwind 36 with a new cooking chamber, I hoped, along with the stainless steel; they had provided twin-wall insulated construction.

I would have hoped that Camp Chef would have provided twin-wall insulated construction on the updated Woodwind 36.
The lack of twin-wall construction is a bit disappointing on the Woodwind 36

What insulated construction offers is more consistent temperatures across the cooking chamber, and it also saves money on pellets, which are two significant benefits.

A feature I’m happy to see Camp Chef stick with is their controller, its one of the best on the market, and if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it if you ask me.

I really do rate the Camp Chef Woodwind 36 controller, I think its excellent.
I think this controller is one of the best ever fitted to a pellet grill/smoker

The controller provides 5-degree temperature adjustment and a separate smoke setting of 1 to 10 with WiFi connectivity and a reliable App. Add on top of that a great screen, and it’s easy to use.

While I do generally rate the controller as one of the best on the market, if I was nitpicking, it doesn’t have as high of a maximum temperature setting as competing products from recteq or Weber.

The maximum temperature setting of 500 degrees is less than that of recteq or Weber's pellets grills.
Ideally, the controller would go above 500 degrees to match its direct competitors

When it comes to grilling/searing, you ideally want the grate temperature to be over 500 degrees. However, the Woodwind 36 does offer an alternative means to achieve higher grate temperatures.

The Camp Chef Woodwind 36 does get direct-flame access, which, when in use, will get the center of the grate up to temperatures around 650 degrees.

The Camp Chef Woodwind 36 get's direct flame access for excellent grilling/searing performance.
Yes, you can indeed flame grill a steak on the Camp Chef Woodwind 36

However, there is an alternative means to sear foods, as the Woodwind 36 can also be retrofitted with the Camp Che propane SideKick burner with a cast-iron skillet.

The new addition of a stainless steel cooking chamber has increased the price point of the Camp Chef Woodwind 36 to several hundred dollars over the thousand-dollar threshold.

The Camp Chef Woodwind 36 is now less affordable than it was before.
The new stainless steel cooking chamber has come along with a new price point

With a typical price point of just under $1,200 (check our database), the Woodwind 36 is up against some pretty steep competition, such as the likes of the new Weber Searwood XL 600.

My Final Thoughts On The Camp Chef Woodwind 36

Ever since it was first launched many years ago now, I’ve always been a fan of the Camp Chef Woodwind as a mid-spec pellet grill to recommend, but it’s now moving from mid-spec to premium spec pricing.

I still think is an excellent pellet grill/smoker choice. I just think its not as clear of a choice as it would have been a few years back with the current pellet grill/smoker competition.
