Pros & Cons – Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

The Woodwind Pro 24 from Camp Chef was the first pellet grill/smoker (but probably not the last) to feature a ‘Smoke Box’. As you’ll see below, the Smoke Box can be quickly and easily loaded with wood chips/chunks to add additional smoke flavor to the food. Right, let’s get into the Pros & Cons.

Right, let’s get straight to the star of the show with regards to the Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24, its easily removable Smoke Box that can be loaded with wood chips/chunks and charcoal.

The Smoke Box is the most unique feature of the Woodwind Pro 24 and arguably its best feature.
The Smoke Box is a clever idea from Camp Chef to make increased smoke production easy and quick

While it’s possible to place a box in the cooking chamber that will add additional smoke with wood chips, chunks, or charcoal, it has to be frequently checked to load fuel and make sure they are still smoldering.

That means the lid of the BBQ has to be opened, which is obviously not ideal, as it then lets out smoke. Therefore, this is where the Smoke Box from Camp Chef has a clear benefit.

While the Smoke Box is a Pro in favor of the Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24, it has come at the expense of removing a feature normally found on Camp Chef pellet grills, direct-flame access.

While the Woodwind Pro 24 gained a Smoke Box in turn it lost direct-flame access.
The gain of a Smoke Box came at the expense of direct-flame access

Without direct-flame access, the Woodwind Pro 24 is limited to its max temp setting of 500 degrees when it comes to grilling and searing, which is not class-leading.

To supplement the grilling/searing capabilities of the Woodwind Pro 24, it is possible to add the Camp Chef propane SideKick with a griddle fitted for searing steaks etc.

The Woodwind Pro 24 is compatible with the Camp Chef propane SideKick.
The SideKick can provide the searing functionality for the Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24

The SideKick is a great tool to add additional functionality to many different models of Camp Chef pellet grill/smoker. However, it does come at an additional cost.

The Woodwind Pro 24 weighs in at around 150 lbs. Add on the SideKick, and the weight goes up a little more. My point is this is definitely not a lightweight BBQ.

I don't like the fact that the Woodwind Pro 24 has four small caster wheels.
I really don’t like the wheel choice Camp Chef has gone with on the Woodwind Pro 24

With only small caster wheels, the Woodwind Pro 24 will be a lot of ‘fun’ to move over a rough/muddy surface, as the chance of tipping up an expensive BBQ is always ‘fun’.

Where Camp Chef has a particularly good reputation is for the reliability and functionality of the controllers they use on their pellet grills/smokers.

The temperature controller on the Camp Chef Woodiwnd Pro 24 is one of the best controllers on the market.
The controller on the Woodwind Pro 24 is easy to use with good functionality

The controller is a full-color touchscreen that features a nice bright display that is angled up towards the user, and therefore its easy to read and use.

These may sound like pretty basic requirements. However, you would be surprised how many other pellet grill/smoker controllers don’t do a good job with usability.

Let’s talk pricing. The standard Woodwind Pro 24 typically retails for just under $1,200. Add on the SideKick, and the price jumps to just under $1,500 (check our database).

The Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24 is definitely a premium option pellet grill/smoker with a relatively high price point.
The price point of the Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24 is high for the average BBQ consumer

Keep in mind, while the features of the Woodwind Pro 24 are impressive and useful, its actually not a very large BBQ, with just a 429 sq.in main grate and 811 sq.in of cooking area overall.

My Final Thoughts On The Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24

There is no getting away from the fact that the Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24 is going to be an expensive pellet grill/smoker for most people, and therefore, potentially unaffordable.

Its also not the largest of pellet BBQs. However, with its feature set, particularly the Smoke Box and SideKick attached, it offers one of the best pellet smoker setups on the market.

However, don’t just take my word for it. Use the link below to browse our database. You can put in your specific budget, and the database will show you all the options available.
