While pellet smokers offer a lot of convenience and save a lot of time compared to managing and monitoring an off-set smoker, they do not produce a smoke flavor that is as intense.

The Smoke Box on the Camp Chef XXL Pro helps it produce smoke flavor closer to that achieved on a stick burner/off-set smoker.
The Smoke Box helps the Camp Chef XXL Pro offer smoke flavor closer to that of an off-set smoker/stick burner

Don’t expect the results to exactly match that of an off-set smoker/stick burner. However, it will be able to get much closer than most other pellet smokers on the market without a Smoke Box.

With a typical price point of just under 900 dollars (check our database), it’s unfortunate that the Camp Chef XXL Pro does not benefit from at least some stainless steel construction.

I'm surprised and disappointed that Camp Chef choose not to include at least some stainless steel construction.
I’m disappointed there is no stainless steel construction

The reason the missing stainless steel is particularly odd is that Camp Chef did include stainless steel construction on their other pellet grills that feature the Smoke Box!?

A good feature of Camp Chef pellet grills/smokers, which is also found on the XXL Pro vertical pellet smoker, is a separate smoke setting from 1 to 10.

What this smoke setting does is let the pellets smolder for longer before new pellets are fed into the burn pot; how long the pellets smolder for depends on the smoke setting number chosen.

The smoke setting on the Camp Chef XXL Pro is a good feature.
An independent smoke setting separate from the temperature settings is a good feature to have

With a higher smoke setting, the temperatures in the XXL Pro will swing wider from the set temperature. However, to get more smoke from a pellet smoker, this is the typical compromise.

The unique proposition with the XXL Pro, though, is you can have a low smoke setting, which will make temperature regulation more accurate but still get good smoke production using the Smoke Box.

As the Camp Chef XXL Pro is purely a vertical pellet smoker, it obviously means it doesn’t offer grilling capabilities and would need a separate means to grill/sear your food.

You’ll need to do your grilling via other means

If you already own, say, a gas grill, sure, the Camp Chef XXL Pro could serve as an excellent partner to your gas grill to provide your food with some smoke flavor before you grill/sear it.

The Camp Chef XXL Pro offers the largest cooking area of any Camp Chef pellet grill/smoker, with a total of 1,806 sq.in when all of the six cooking racks are in use.

The cooking area on the XXL Pro of over 1,800 sq.in is very large.
The XXL Pro offers a very large cooking area

The Camp Chef XXL Pro offers one of the largest cooking areas of the 270+ models now included in our database. Therefore, if you do often cook for large groups of people, it could be a good option.

With a price point approaching a thousand dollars, despite its positive features (Smoke Box etc), it is debatable whether the Camp Chef XXL is providing good value.

You could argue that the Camp Chef XXL Pro is expensive for the features it offers.
I do think the price of the XXL Pro is a bit too high

My main issue with its 900-dollar price point is the lack of stainless steel construction; at this price point, I really think it should feature some stainless steel construction.

My Final Thoughts On The Camp Chef XXL Pro

I do like the Smoke Box design that Camp Chef has developed as a quick and easy means to give a pellet smoker more smoking potential while keeping its low maintenance appeal.

Though I do think, for its price, that Camp Chef should have included at least some stainless steel construction, similar to that of the Grilla Grills Mammoth.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts. Please use the link below to check out our database to review all of the vertical pellet smokers currently on the market and compare their features/price points.
