Pros & Cons – GE Profile Smart Indoor Pellet Smoker

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

The GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker is a world-first, an indoor pellet smoker. Yes, you read that correctly. You are now able to smoke indoors. Its effectively an electric smoker that uses a small amount of wood pellets to create the smoke flavor in the food. So, what are the Pros and Cons of this new way to smoke your food with pellets? Well, let’s review them shall we…

Up until this point, its simply not been possible to smoke food indoors for obvious reasons. There are fire risks, as well as health risks from breathing in smoke particulates and a significant risk of death from carbon monoxide poisoning.

So, how does the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker address these risks? Well, first off, note this is predominantly an electric smoker; its not using the pellets for heat.

Therefore, only a small amount of wood pellets are used to produce the smoke, which has a couple of benefits we’ll discuss below. But how does the GE Profile Smoke Indoor Smoker deal with the smoke particulates and carbon monoxide?

GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker Active Smoke Filtration System
The GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker features an ‘active smoke filtration system’

In our video at the top of the page, you get to see a bit better how this ‘active smoke filtration system’ works. However, its essentially a catalytic converter, similar to that fitted to the exhaust system of many vehicles.

GE provides little detail on the specifics of exactly how their filtration system is so effective at stopping smoke particulates from entering the room and how it neutralizes carbon monoxide, but that’s not too surprising.

I’ve been watching the development of this indoor pellet smoker for several years now. It was originally branded as the Arden smoker.

They have created the world’s first indoor smoker, and they will want to keep it that way for as long as possible, so they are not going to be too candid on exactly how their active smoke filtration system works.

As an indoor smoker, that has got to fit into the kitchen environment, it obviously cannot be too large. Hence, the cooking area available is going to be limited. GE stated the following on how much food this indoor smoker can hold:

“The Profile Smoker’s small footprint but large capacity means it can fit 3 racks of ribs (cut in half); a brisket (cut in half); a full chicken; up to 40 chicken wings; or a 14 pound pork butt.”

Now, for couples and small families, that quantity of food is fine and will meet their needs. However, for larger families and smoking food for a large group of friends, its obviously limited.

GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker Relatively Small Cooking Area
The GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker can cook a brisket, but you’ll need to cut it in half

I think the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker is ideal for those living in an apartment for a couple of reasons.

First, if you live in an apartment its likely you’re either single, a couple, or a small family. Hence, the amount of food the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker can cook is sufficient.

The GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker Is Ideal For Apartment Owners
Currently, the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker is the only safe/practical means for apartment owners to produce barbeque at home

The second reason is that if you live in an apartment, owning a traditional pellet grill or pellet smoker that you have to use outside is not really a practical option. You may have access to a shared outside space, but how would you store and secure your pellet barbeque?

Some apartment owners have a balcony, but in many cases, its still not safe (or legal in many cases) to use a pellet grill/smoker of any kind of barbeque on a balcony.

Therefore, I think the main appeal of the GE Profile indoor smoker is for apartment owners. So they can enjoy the experience of producing real smoked barbeque food at home.

So, as I’ve stated above, I think the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker is best suited to apartment owners as their only safe/practical means to cook real barbeque at home.

However, apartment owners also tend to have smaller kitchens and, hence, less free worktop space available. Which is potentially problem with this indoor smoker.

The external dimensions of the smoker are just over 16 inches wide, 20 inches deep, and 16 inches high. However, you also have to consider the clearances required during use.

4 Inch clearances needed on the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker during use.
There should be a 4-inch clearance on the sides and the back of the indoor smoker during use

Following the guidance from GE on required clearances during use, that increases the total worktop space required to a total width of 24 inches and a depth of 24 inches.

That’s quite a lot of worktop space, especially for a small kitchen, which is likely the case for an apartment owner who, I think, is the key target market for this indoor pellet smoker.

A feature that is found on many traditional pellet grills and smokers today and offers a lot of utility when it comes to smoking foods is WiFi connectivity and App control/monitoring.

Smoking foods takes time. However, time is valuable, and you likely don’t have the time to babysit the whole process, frequently checking the internal temperature of the meat to know when its done.

The GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker features WiFi connectivity and monitor and adjustment through the App
Through the App, its possible to monitor and adjust the cook

The GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker has a meat probe that can monitor the internal temperature of the meat and cook it to a set temperature. When that temperature is achieved, the smoker will keep the meat warm until you’re ready for it.

Through the App, you can monitor and adjust the cook whether you’re still in the house but away from the kitchen or you’re out and about but you have a cell signal.

So what’s the damage? Well, I’m writing this just as the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker has just hit the market, and its $999. However, check our database on the homepage for the latest price.

I’m not too surprised with that price point at this early stage. After all, it is the ‘world’s first indoor smoker‘, but still, its a price that is not going to be an affordable option for many people.

Again, I go back to my point about what I believe the key target market is, apartment owners. Do many apartment owners have a spare grand to put down on a new kitchen gadget?

The GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker currently has a high price point
At just under a thousand dollars, the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker is not going to be an affordable option for many

Will the price come down over time? More than likely. However, for those who don’t live in an apartment and have the outside space available for a traditional pellet grill/smoker, is the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker worth the price?

That’s obviously a personal perspective/decision. What I can tell you, and you can see for yourself by checking out our database, is you can get a lot for your money with a traditional pellet grill/smoker for a thousand dollars.

My Final Thoughts On The GE Profile Smart Indoor Pellet Smoker

So, what are my final thoughts on the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker? Well, first off, I think its a highly impressive new bit of kit. I’m all for new means and methods to cook with pellets.

I would also love to know more about how exactly that active smoke filtration system works.

Second, the fact that you can now smoke indoors and apartment owners have the ability to cook real barbeque at home is amazing, fantastic. The cooking area is obviously pretty limited, but for many couples/small families, its sufficient.

The price point of just under a thousand dollars is more than I was expecting, and I do think it will come down over time. At this point in time though, if you do have access to an outdoor space for a traditional pellet grill/smoker, I think you will find better value there.
