When it comes to cheap/budget pellet grills/smokers, there aren’t much cheaper than the KingChii portable pellet grill, with a typical price point of around $250.

The KingChii portable pellet grill has a very low price point of around $250.
The KingChii portable pellet grill could be referred to as the budget Traeger Tailgater at half the price

In our database, there are currently a couple of cheaper pellet grills/smokers. However, they are all tabletop models, hence they have a much smaller cooking area than the KingChii.

The maximum temperature setting of the KingChii portable pellet grill is only 420 degrees. That’s low by many pellet grill standards, and well below the ideal temperatures for good grilling.

The peak maximum temperature on the KingChii portable pellet grill is only 420 degrees.
A maximum temperature setting of 420 degrees is lower than most other pellet grills/smokers

To improve the grilling performance of a KingChii portable pellet grill, I would recommend two things: a set of GrillGrates and the choice of 100% charcoal pellets for maximum heat output.

A cooking area of 456 square inches is not large by overall pellet grill standards. However, for a pellet grill at this price point its very large, and a practical cooking area for a small family/group of friends.

The cooking area of 456 sq.in on the KingChii portable pellet grill is very large for a pellet grill at this low price point.
A reasonable amount of food can be cooked in the KingChii with room to properly move the food around

Now, the image above may imply that the main grate is 456 sq.in, but that’s not the case. The main grate is 300 sq.in, and there is a second small upper cooking rack to provide the additional 156 sq.in.

By modern pellet grill/smoker standards, a 25-degree temperature adjustment is not very accurate. Many models today offer 10 or 5 degree temperature adjustment.

The KingChii portable pellet grill controller is based on previous generation technology.
The KingChii portable pellet grill controller is basic compared to modern standards

Now, the basic/previous generation controller shouldn’t be too surprising; this is a very cheap pellet grill/smoker. Also, these previous generation controllers are actually better in some cases at producing smoke.

While many people can and do use the KingChii pellet grill as their backyard BBQ, it’s also a portable model with folding legs and a relatively low weight of 72 lbs.

The portable nature of the KingChii pellet grill/smoker gives it extra utility.
You can use this pellet grill at home and then take it with you to tailgating parties/camping trips

To use it as a portable pellet grill, you would need a 12V DC to 110V AC power inverter, but they are reasonably affordable, and it gives this pellet grill/smoker extra utility.

As I’ve stated above, this KingChii portable pellet grill shares a striking resemblance to the Traeger Tailgator. Well, the folding legs on that model are notoriously tricky to use/fold up.

The folding legs on the KingChii are a good feature, but they can be tricky to fold up.
Having folding legs is a good feature to have, but they can be tricky to use

The legs are not spring loaded; therefore, getting all of the legs into the position at the same time can be tricky, and owners have stated you have to be careful not to drop the pellet grill.

My Final Thoughts On The KingChii Portable Pellet Grill

The very low price point of the KingChii has been a good entry into the world of pellet grills/smokers for many people, where pellet grills/smokers are generally more expensive than other BBQs.

The capabilities of the KingChii portable pellet grill are definitely limited, the low maximum temperature for instance and the folding legs can be tricky, but then again, its very, very cheap.
