Compared to its direct competition around the 500-dollar price point, the Austin XL Onyx Edition offers one of the largest overall cooking areas, and the largest main grate.

For its price point, the Pit Boss Austin XL offers on the largest overall cooking areas, and the largest main grate.
The Austin XL Onyx Edition offers good value with regard to cooking area

The overall cooking area of 1,008 sq.in over two cooking surfaces and 720 sq.in over the main cooking grate are some of the best stats you will find at this price point (check our database).

With a budget pellet grill/smoker, you shouldn’t be surprised that compromises have to be made to produce a relatively large pellet grill/smoker at this price point.

The overall build quality and the paint finish on the Austin XL are not up there with the best pellet grills/smokers on the market.
Expect some rough edges and the paint finish to be lacking in a few areas

Most Pit Boss pellet grills/smokers are budget-focused products. Therefore, you always have to keep that under consideration when considering their products.

For more accurate temperature control, you want a pellet grill/smoker running a PID algorithm. However, with more accurate temperature control, you will get less smoke as a result.

The Austin XL controller benefits from PID technology, but it retains a P-Setting for smoke adjustment.
Its good to see the P-Setting return on Pit Boss controllers that use PID technology

With the P-Setting increasing the number will increase the paused amount of time the auger doesn’t feed pellets into the burn pot, that will in turn increase the amount of smoke produced.

For some reason, even though Pit Boss fits a very similar controller on other models with WiFi/App functionality, they chose not to include the feature on the Austin XL Onyx Edition.

Unfortunately, the Pit Boss Austin XL Onyx Edition does not get WiFi functionality to communicate with the SmokeIT App.
I do find it a bit odd that Pit Boss didn’t give the Austin XL Onyx Edition the ability to communicate with the SmokeIT App

Is the missing WiFi/App support a big deal? Well, if you primarily grill your food instead of smoking it over long periods of time, the missing WiFi connectivity would have little to no impact.

However, if you do primarily smoke your food overnight perhaps. Well, that’s with the WiFi connectivity, and the App can really come in handy.

In terms of being a pellet grill, this is where the strengths of the Austin XL Onyx Edition really are, as it can get the grate up to temperatures in excess of 650 degrees.

The direct-flame access of the Pit Boss Austin XL Onyx Edition mean its grilling performance is excellent.
The Austin XL Onyx Edition will have no problem getting a good sear on steaks and burgers etc

The direct-flame access is limited to the center of the grates directly above the flame broiler, but its an area that’s easily workable and functional.

Any pellet grill, the Austin XL included, that comes with the benefit of direct-flame access, it also carries with it the increased risk of a potential grease fire.

The Pit Boss Austin XL Onyx Edition will need to be cleaned frequently to avoid the risk of a grease fire.
The flame broiler on the Austin XL is a Pro, but it comes along with its own Con of an increased grease fire risk

Now, while a grease fire risk is increased with direct-flame access, as long as the user keeps the BBQ maintained and clean, the risk is manageable.

My Final Thoughts On The Pit Boss Austin XL 1000 Onyx Edition

While the missing WiFi/App connectivity of the Austin XL Onyx Edition is a bit disappointing, for its price of just under 500 dollars, its still one of the best value pellet grills on the market.

The large 720 sq.in main grate is much larger than many pellet grills/smokers that are twice the price of the Austin XL. Yes, the materials/paint finish are not the best, but its under 500 dollars.

However, don’t just take my word for it. Tap/click below to use our database to compare the facts and figures of the Austin XL to make up your own mind about how it stacks up against the competition.
