Pros & Cons – Pit Boss Charleston Onyx Edition

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

Griddles are a growing market in outdoor cooking. However, pellet grilling and smoking still offers its own appeal. Therefore, more brands are combining the two cooking technologies into a single product. Here we have the Pit Boss Charleston Onyx Edition, a pellet smoker with a gas griddle. Right, let’s look at its Pros & Cons.

Sometimes, you want to spend the time to smoke your food for flavor on the weekend, and sometimes you just want to quickly cook up some food on weeknights etc.

Featuring both a pellet grill/smoker and a propane gas griddle the Pit Boss Charleston Onyx Edition offers a lot of cooking utility.
With both pellets and gas as a means to cook food, the Charleston has a lot of cooking utility

The other benefit of a setup such as this is reverse searing steaks and burgers etc. Hence, you first smoke them on the pellet side and then finish them with a sear on the gas griddle.

When it comes to smoking foods, while the Charleston has good capabilities to do so, the quantity of food you will be cooking will be limited compared to many other pellet grills/smokers.

The pellet smoking side of the Pit Boss Charleston Onyx Edition is quite small compared to many other alternatives.
These Pit Boss figures for the amount of food you can fit in the Charleston pellet smoker are overly optimistic

As usual, Pit Boss (like every other brand) provides figures for the number of burgers etc you can fit in there. Let’s be real here, you’re never going to be able to fit 42 burgers in there and be able to cook them properly.

I do genuinely rate the controller fitted to the Pit Boss Charleston Onyx Edition as it offers 5-degree temperature adjustment, which is not that common on most pellet grills/smokers.

The controller fitted to the Pit Boss Charleston Onyx Edition is one of the better control panels on the market.
The controller offers tight temperature control with minimal temperature swings when you want it

The controller also features a setting (the P-Setting), which can be used to add more swing into the temperature regulation. Why would you want that? Well, more swing means more smoke.

Unfortunately, Pit Boss has chosen not to include WiFi or Bluetooth connectivity in the controller of the Charleston Onyx Edition.

While Pit Boss has their own App (SmokeIT), unfortunately the Charleston Onyx Edition is not compatible.
The Charleston Onyx Edition does not get WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity as standard

Now, it is technically possible to get an upgraded control panel from Pit Boss with WiFi connectivity. However, for the additional cost ($150), its an expensive add-on.

There are many pellet grill/gas grill options on the market. Our database currently shows 17 different options, but there are only currently a handful of pellet smoker/gas griddle models.

The Pit Boss Charleston Onyx Edition is currently one of only a few pellet smoker/propane griddle models.
If you want a propane griddle with your pellet smoker, this is currently one of only a few options

An alternative would be the Blackstone 22 XL Combo, which has its own Pros & Cons. However, other than that, these are currently the only two pellet smoker/gas griddle combos.

Now, the typical price point of the Charleston Onyx Edition is very reasonable/affordable at under $700 (check our database). However, Pit Boss products, in general, don’t have the best build quality.

Don't expect the Pit Boss Charleston Onyx Edition to offer the best build quality.
The Charleston is a budget pellet grill built to a price point

My point is, if you purchase a Pit Boss product at their generally budget-friendly price point, expect a few rough edges here and there, it comes with the low price point.

My Final Thoughts On The Pit Boss Charleston Onyx Edition

I get the appeal of griddles and their specific cooking functionality. Therefore, integrating a pellet smoker together with a propane grill makes a lot of sense in many cases.

The compromise is that the pellet smoker side of the cooking equation is pretty small for the price point compared to other dedicated Pit Boss pellet grills/smokers of the same price point.

If you are in the market for such a combo BBQ, I would encourage you to check out our database through the link below and to use the drop-down option to select ‘Pellet/Gas Combo’ and ‘Griddle/Pellet Smoker’.
