Pros & Cons – Pit Boss Competition Series 1250

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

The Competition Series 1250 is the bigger brother to the Competition Series 850. They are similar in many respects. However, the 1250 gets a roll-top lid, which the 850 does not. Right then, let’s review the Pros & Cons of this particular Pit Boss pellet grill/smoker.

The Pit Boss Competition Series 1250 has a typical price point of just under $700 (check our database), and for that price point, you will struggle to find a larger cooking area.

The large cooking area for just under $700 is a Pro in favor of the Pit Boss Competition Series 1250.
There are only a few other pellet grills/smokers at this price point that offer a larger overall cooking area

The Competition Series 1250 gets an overall cooking area of 1,315 sq.in over three cooing surfaces. Notably, the main grate is also pretty reasonable at 540 sq.in.

Pit Boss pellet grills/smokers offer a lot for the money. However, that does mean that compromises have to be made in other areas. Namely, the build quality and materials used.

The fit and finish of the Pit Boss Competition Series 1250 is the not the best on the market.
Being a value-focused pellet grill/smoker, the fit and finish of the Competition Series 1250 is not the best

I still think for its features and cooking area, the Competition Series 1250 is offering good value for the money. My point is, keep your expectations on build quality in check.

I would argue that the Competition Series 1250 is fitted with one of the better, if not the best, Pit Boss controllers, due to the features it offers.

The Competition Series 1250 gets a PID controller with P-Setting adjustment and WiFi connectivity.
There is a specific reason why I think this controller is one of Pit Boss’s best panels

Pit Boss has lots of controllers fitted to their products with PID temperature control and WiFi connectivity. However, very few also get a P-Setting for smoke production adjustment, which this one has.

This 1250 is not the worst offender when it comes to small wheels, as at least two of the wheels are a little larger than caster wheels.

I don't particularly like the smallish wheels on the Competition Series 1250.
The are not the worst small wheels I’ve seen on a pellet grill/smoker, but they are also not the best

For those who would not have to frequently move their grill, the size of the wheels will be a non-issue. However, for anyone else, small wheels on a heavy grill can get annoying.

Getting high grate surface temperature is not a problem with the Competition Series 1250 as it offers direct-flame access, or a flame broiler, as Pit Boss sometimes refers to the feature.

The Competition Series 1250 comes with direct-flame access for grate temperatures over 500 degrees.
It is indeed possible to get flame-kissed burgers and steaks on the Competition Series 1250

While the controller has a maximum temperature setting of 500 degrees, with the flame broiler, the grate surface temperatures will exceed 650 degrees.

While the flame-broiler improves grilling/searing results, it does come with its own risks that need to be taken seriously to avoid a potential grease fire.

The flame boiler on the Competition Series 1250 needs to be cleaned frequently.
The increased risk of a grease fire when using the flame broiler needs to be taken seriously

Obviously, a grease fire is really only likely to happen if the grease tray/flame-broiler is very dirty/greasy. Therefore, the risk can be significantly reduced with frequent proper cleaning.

My Final Thoughts On The Pit Boss Competition Series 1250

I think the Competition Series range of products is currently the best option when it comes to the Pit Boss range of pellet grills/smokers.

As well as the features I’ve discussed above as Pros that I like, I’m also a fan of the roll-top lid design. Its easier for shorter people to open, and there is less risk of burning the underside of your arm.

Realistically, for a pellet grill/smoker of this size, as you can check for yourself through the link to our database below, there are currently few better options at this price point.
