Pros & Cons – Pit Boss Competition Series 1600

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

The largest model under the Pit Boss Competition Series is branded as the 1600, similar in many regards to its smaller siblings, the Competition 850 and Competition 1250. Only like the 1250 though, the 1600 also gets the roll-top lid design, which I’m a fan of. Right, let’s review its Pros & Cons.

As the name of the Competition 1600 suggests, it offers a large cooking area, not quite 1600 sq.in, but it comes in at 1,578 sq.in, which is pretty close.

The Pit Boss Competition Series 1600 offers three cooking racks, offering a total cooking area of 1,578 square inches.
Offering a cooking area of 1,578 square inches for under 800 dollars is good value

With a price point under 800 dollars, if you check our database, you will see that its hard to find a larger cooking area for less money from another pellet grill/smoker.

The reality of Pit Boss being able to offer some of the largest pellet grills/smokers for relatively low price points is that the build quality and paint finish of their products are not the best.

The Pit Boss Competition Series 1600 offers good value for its size, but its not the best built pellet grill/smoker on the market.
With good value for the size of this pellet grill/smoker, it comes the reality of less-than-brilliant build quality

Does the build quality/paint finish mean that I think it is a pellet grill to avoid? Nope, it just needs to be viewed in context for the price, and the paint finish issues can be relatively easily addressed.

I would probably argue, as of this moment, that the controller fitted to the Competition Series 1600 is the best controller of the many fitted to Pit Boss pellet grills/smokers.

The reason it’s the best controller is it gets PID technology with 5-degree temperature adjustment, but it still retains the P-Setting for smoke adjustment, and it gets a WiFi connection for the Pit Boss App.

The Competition Series 1600 comes in just over 222lbs. However, that’s with an empty hopper. With a full 26lb hopper of pellets, that’s a total weight of just under 250lbs, on tiny little wheels.

I'm not a fan on the small wheels of the Pit Boss Competition Series 1600.
Small wheels on heavy pellet grills/smokers has been an unfortunate growing trend for years

Now, moving 250lbs of pellet grill over a smooth, hard, flat surface is fine with these small wheels, probably. However, I know its going to cause problems over a wet lawn.

For many years now, when it comes to pellet grills being able to actually grill, Pit Boss has been the budget brand to go to as they widely offer a flame broiler.

The Competition Series 1600 gets a flame broiler for good grilling/searing performance.
The flame broiler on the Competition Series 1600 will offer good grilling functionality

While the controller only has a maximum temperature setting of 500 degrees, that’s not representative of the temperatures at the grate with the flame broiler in use, which will be much higher (650+).

I generally support offering a flame broiler on pellet grills/smokers. However, it does come with its own risks that owners need to properly prepare for with proper cleaning to avoid a grease fire.

The flame broiler on the Pit Boss Competition Series 1600 can quickly turn from a positive to a negative if the grill is not cleaned frequently enough.
A flame broiler does increase the risk of a grease fire if the grill is not cleaned at regular intervals after use

A grease fire on a pellet grill/smoker can take longer to put out than on a gas grill, as cooling a pellet BBQ down takes longer. Therefore, avoiding a grease fire in the first place is important.

My Final Thoughts On The Pit Boss Competition Series 1600

Of the current Pit Boss products, I rate the Competition Series as their best products in terms of their features, size, and price point.

Therefore, for under $800, I think the Competition Series 1600 is definitely worth considering if your budget cannot stretch any higher.

But don’t just take my word for it. Use the link below to play around with our database to see what other options are available to you under your budget.
