Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

Let’s say you already own a gas grill. Well, instead of purchasing a horizontal pellet grill/smoker, a better option may be to go with a vertical pellet smoker. Well, here is a typical example, the Pit Boss Copperhead Onyx Edition. Right, let’s review its Pros & Cons.

As of writing, the Pit Boss Copperhead Onyx Edition is currently the cheapest vertical pellet smoker in our database, with a typical price point of around $474.

The Pit Boss Copperhead Onyx Edition is one of the cheapest vertical pellet smokers currently on the market.
If you are looking for a cheap/low-cost vertical pellet smoker, the Copperhead Onyx Edition should be on your list

Providing a total cooking area over five racks of 1,300 square inches, the Copperhead Onyx Edition can cook a huge amount of food for a large family/group of friends.

As part of my job, I browse the pellet grill/smoker owners’ forums and read many owners’ reviews, etc. Unfortunately, there is clearly an issue with damaged units being delivered to customers.

Its not uncommon to find a review of a Copperhead Onyx Edition owner complaining about a damaged product being delivered.
Its not clear if the damaged units being delivered to customers is a Walmart problem or a Pit Boss problem

With Pit Boss products, while they do generally offer good value and a good low-cost means to own a pellet grill/smoker, damaged units and build quality issues are not uncommon.

The Copperhead Onyx Edition gets a collection of useful features such as the quick access grease/ash collection draw and a hopper clean-out shoot.

The Pit Boss Copperhead Onyx Edition has a host of useful features.
Keeping the Copperhead clean and functioning properly is pretty easy and takes up little time

Now, features such as the easy access grease/ashtray and the hopper dump may seem like obvious features, but you would be surprised by the number of more expensive models that don’t always have them.

The Copperhead vertical pellet smoker does not have the same controller as the other Onyx Edition models, such as the Lexington, Classic, Austin XL, or Savannah.

The controller fitted to the Pit Boss Copperhead Onyx Edition vertical pellet smoker.
The Copperhead is not fitted with a bad controller, its just not as good as that fitted to the other Onyx Edition models

The controller on other Onyx Edition models offers a 5-degree temperature adjustment and a P-Setting for further adjustment. The Copperhead gets a 10-degree adjustment and no P-Setting.

The pellet hopper on the Pit Boss Copperhead is absolutely massive and can hold 65 lbs of pellets, which is easily enough to smoke for many hours, even days, consistently.

The pellet hopper on the Pit Boss Copperhead Onyx Edition can hold 65 lbs of pellets.
No reasonable person thinks the pellet hopper in this Copperhead vertical pellet smoker isn’t big enough

At lower smoking temperatures, in a mild climate, pellet consumption will typically be around 1 lb per hour of pellets. Therefore, in theory, the Copperhead and full hopper could go for 65 hours!?

While the Copperhead doesn’t have a single wall of steel for the cooking chamber, like a typical Pit Boss horizontal pellet grill/smoker, its twin-wall construction doesn’t provide that much insulation.

The Copperhead Onyx Edition features minimal insulation.
As you can see, the body construction of the Copperhead is pretty thin

Now, again, it needs to be kept in context. This is the cheapest vertical pellet smoker on the market. But my point is; ideally, the Copperhead Onyx Edition would get more insulation to reduce pellet consumption.

My Final Thoughts On The Pit Boss Copperhead Onyx Edition

With a budget under 500 dollars for a vertical pellet smoker, you cannot currently do any better than the Pit Boss Copperhead Onyx Edition.

Yes, it has its shortcomings, and yes, if you did purchase one, hopefully, it wouldn’t arrive damaged. But overall, as a cheap/low-cost entry into the work of pellet smokers, it’s not a bad option at all.

However, before you make any purchase, I would encourage you to check out our database through the link below to review and compare all your options.
