Pros & Cons – Pit Boss Pro Series 1150 (Gen 3)

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

The Pit Boss Pro Series range is now in its third iteration, of which the 1150 is currently the smallest model with the upgraded features. However, rather oddly, the 1150 is missing a feature found on other Pit Boss models, which we’ll discuss below. Right, let’s get into the Pros & Cons…

The updated touchscreen controller on the Pro 1150 Gen 3 is not only brighter than the previous generation controller, but it can display more information to the user.

The Pro Series 1150 Gen 3 features a new full-color touchscreen controller.
In general, I do like the design/screen of the new updated controller on the Pro 1150 Gen 3

With the controller being a touch screen, it means you have more direct control over what the grill is doing through the screen in a simple and easy-to-understand fashion.

Oddly, the Pro Series 1150 Gen 3 is missing P-Setting adjustment, which lets the user have more direct control over how much smoke the pellet fire produces.

Unfortunately, the latest version of the Pit Boss Pro Series 1150 is missing P-setting adjustment.
It is a bit disappointing that Pit Boss didn’t include the P-Setting on the 1150 Gen 3

The reason I find the missing P-Setting particularly odd is that Pit Boss includes the feature on its other updated models at a cheaper price point to the Pro Series models.

The Pro Series 1150 Gen 3 gets direct-flame access functionality that gives the user a leaver to let the flames from the pellet burn pot reach the cooking grates for higher temperatures.

The Pro Series 1150 Gen 3 will have no trouble searing steaks and burgers with its flame broiler.
The flame broiler leaver on the Pro Series 1150 Gen 3 will provide grate temperatures of 650 degrees plus

The Pro Series 1150 Gen 3 also features porcelain-coated cast-iron grates, which will hold onto the heat from the flame broiler to aid in better grilling/searing performance.

Getting some owners to properly and frequently clean their pellet grill/smoker can be a challenge, and unfortunately, with direct-flame access functionality, it comes with its own risks.

While the flame broiler on the Pro Series 1150 Gen 3 is a Pro, the associated grease fire risks are a Con.
Unfortunately, the flame broiler comes with its own Con of the increased risk of a grease fire

Please note, with proper cleaning, the increased risk of a grease fire with the flame broiler can be sufficiently mitigated, and it shouldn’t be an issue, with proper cleaning…

The Pit Boss Pro Series 1150 Gen 3 has a typical price point of just under 700 dollars (check our database). As such, for the money, it does have competitive features compared to the competition.

For just under $700, the Pro Series 1150 Gen 3 is pretty good value.
You could do worse with a budget of $700 than to go with the Pro Series 1150 Gen 3

For instance, the 1150 Gen 3 offers a main grate size of over 700 square inches, which is one of the largest main grates for the price point.

With Pit Boss products which are ‘value focused’ for the most part, while they do offer good features, general build quality is an area where their products are not market-leading.

The general build quality of the Pit Boss 1150 Gen 3 is not going to match the best products on the market.
If you were going to store the Pro Series 1150 Gen 3 outside, I would strongly recommend getting a cover

Pit Boss does offer a pretty good 5-year warranty on their products. However, it does not cover the paint finish or rust. Therefore, protecting the pellet grill from the elements is important.

My Final Thoughts On The Pit Boss Pro Series 1150 Gen 3

For the money, the Pro Series 1150 Gen 3 is a pretty good option. It’s got a good controller with 5-degrees temperature adjustment, a nice large 32lb hopper, direct-flame access, and a large main grate.

It’s not so much that you can get a better pellet grill/smoker from another brand for the same money, more that I think there are better Pit Boss pellet grills/smokers for the same money.

As I stated above, the Pro Series 1150 Gen 3 lacks a P-Setting. Well, the Pit Boss Competition Series grills have it, along with all the other features of the Pro Series 1150, for similar money.

Don’t just take my word for it. Use the link below to check out our database to compare the Pro Series 1150 against its wider competition and competition from within the Pit Boss brand.
