Pros & Cons – Pit Boss Pro Series 1600 (Gen 3)

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

The Pro Series 1600 Gen 3 is the next step up in size over the Pro Series 1150. These pellet grills/smokers are very similar in most regards, but the 1600 has a larger overall cooking area and a slightly higher price point. Right, let’s review its Pros & Cons.

All of the updated Gen 3 Pro Series models have been given a new touchscreen controller that can provide a lot more information on the screen for the user to see.

The touchscreen controller on the Pit Boss Pro Series 1600 Gen 3 is a big step up over the previous model.
The new touchscreen controller is able to provide a lot more information

The other benefit of the new controller is for the first time; the Pit Boss Pro Series models are able to adjust their temperature in 5-degree increments.

While the new touchscreen controller has its benefits, it is missing a feature found on many other Pit Boss pellet grills/smokers that serves an important function, the P-Setting.

Unfortunately the Pit Boss Pro Series 1600 Gen 3 is missing a P-Setting.
With no P-Setting its not possible to make the pellets smolder/smoke more when desired

With very accurate temperature control on a pellet grill/smoker, you get less smoke; that’s just how it goes. Therefore, a P-Setting (Pause Setting) can add in some temp swings, which will produce more smoke.

While the controller maxes out at 500 degrees, that is not the maximum temperature the Pro 1600 can reach at the grate. It can get higher than that with the flame broiler in use.

With a flame broiler (direct-flame access) the Pit Boss Pro Series 1600 can get a great sear on steaks and burgers etc.
Direct-flame access/flame broiler, they both mean the same thing, higher grate temperatures

With the flame broiler open, the temperatures at the grate directly above the flames will reach upwards of 650 degrees, probably not up to 1,000 degrees at Pit Boss claims though.

On any pellet grill/smoker with a flame broiler, including the Pro 1600 Gen 3, you need to be really, really careful to avoid a grease fire when using direct-flame access.

The risks of a grease fire, with any pellet grill/smoker, including the Pro 1600 Gen 3, need to be taken seriously.
When using a flame broiler, its important that the grease tray is not too dirty/greasy, as you could regret not cleaning it

So direct-flame access on a pellet grill/smoker has its Pro and its Con. However, the Con of the increased risk of a grease fire can be managed with proper maintenance/cleaning of the grill.

The typical price point of the Pit Boss Pro Series 1600 Gen 3 is just under a thousand dollars (check our database), and for its size/features, its a pretty good value deal.

The Pit Boss Pro Series Gen 3 offers good value for its features for under a thousand dollars.
The Pro Series 1600 Gen 3 is not a bad option when spending under a grand on a pellet grill/smoker

Its overall cooking area of close to 1,600 square inches and its main grate of over 700 square inches are good specifications to go along with the other positive features I’ve mentioned above.

While Pit Boss pellet grills/smokers offer good value for their size features, that does come at a cost, and from owner reports, it often comes at the cost of general build quality/paint finish.

If I was to purchase a Pit Boss Pro Series 1600 Gen 3 I would make sure to get a cover for it.
The Pro Series 1600 Gen 3 is definitely a pellet grill/smoker that should be covered when not in use

The paint finish of Pit Boss products is not covered under their 5-year warranty. Therefore, to avoid rust as much as possible, I personally would cover it up if stored outside.

My Final Thoughts On The Pit Boss Pro Series 1600 Gen 3

Right, I like the controller usability on the Pro Series 1600 Gen 3; I think it’s easier to read/use than the previous generation, but I don’t like the fact it’s missing the P-Setting.

I think the Pro Series 1600 Gen 3 generally offers good value for a pellet grill/smoker under a thousand dollars. However, I also know there are other Pit Boss products offering better value (Competition Series).

Therefore, I would encourage you to browse our database through the link below, and you can compare the Pro Series 1600 against the Pit Boss Competition Series pellet grills/smokers.
