Pros & Cons – Pit Boss Savannah Onyx Edition

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

The Onyx Edition range of products from Pit Boss was started with the introduction of the Savannah, a relatively large pellet grill/smoker that is sold exclusively through Walmart. It features a notable improvement over some Pit Boss models, but its also lacking a notable feature as well. Right, let’s review the Pros & Cons of this particular pellet grill/smoker.

The typical price point for the Pit Boss Savannah is just under $600 (check our database). Well, for that price point, you get a total cooking area of just over 1,500 square inches.

If you narrow the results of our database to show all pellet grills/smokers under 600 dollars, you will see you cannot actually get a larger cooking area on a horizontal pellet grill at that price point.

The Pit Boss Savannah Onyx Edition offers the largest cooking area for its respective price point.
When it comes to overall cooking area, for the price the Savannah is currently top dog

However, its not just the overall cooking area where the Savannah is currently offering the best value, it also offers the largest main grate for the price, at 720 square inches.

As the Savannah Onyx Edition is offering the largest cooking area for its price point, it shouldn’t be too surprising that compromises have to be made in other areas.

For the price and its size you shouldn't expect the Savannah Onyx Edition to also offer the best build quality.
For its size and the price, you shouldn’t be surprised the Savannah is not the best-built pellet grill on the market

Now, Pit Boss does offer a pretty decent 5-Year Warranty. However, that warranty does not cover the paint finish or rust. Therefore, to keep it in its best condition, you would ideally store it in a garage/shed.

At this point, when searching for a new pellet grill/smoker, you would ideally get a model with PID temperature control technology. However, PID on its own is not ideal.

You ideally want a controller that can be less accurate on temperature control when you want more smoke. A controller that will let the pellet fire smolder and produce more smoke.

The controller fitted to the Pit Boss Savannah Onyx Edition is definitely an area where its superior to many other Pit Boss models.
Pit Boss gets a thumbs up from me by offering 5-degree temperature control but also providing a P-Setting

So what’s a P-Setting when its at home? Well, it simply stands for Pause Setting. In other words, you can manually adjust how long the pellet feed auger pauses for before putting in more pellets to the burn pot.

The result is you can make the pellets smolder more or less. Now, a higher P-Setting and making the pellets smolder more will widen the temp swings, but that’s how it goes.

Unfortunately, the Pit Boss Savannah Onyx Edition is missing the ability to connect to a WiFi router and link up the Pit Boss SmokeIT app, which I do find a bit odd personally.

It is rather odd that Pit Boss chose to not include WiFi functionality into the Savannah controller.
I do find it a bit odd that Pit Boss has omitted WiFi/App functionality from the Savannah controller

The reason I find it odd that WiFi has not been included in the controller is that Pit Boss includes WiFi in this same controller fitted to other Pit Boss models, the Competition Series 850 as an example.

Like many other Pit Boss pellet grills/smokers, the Savannah Onyx Edition benefits from a feature called direct-flame access, which aids with grilling and searing on pellet grills.

The Savannah Onyx Edition gets direct-flame access like many other Pit Boss models.
The Savannah is able to reach temperatures of 650 degrees plus at the grate due to direct-flame access

Pit Boss does make claims in their marketing materials about grate temperatures of 1,000 degrees. That’s overly optimistic, but 650 degrees plus is indeed possible, especially with charcoal pellets.

While direct flame access is Pro when it comes to grilling/searing, it can eventually turn into a Con if the grease collector is not cleaned frequently enough.

Direct-flame access on the Savannah can turn into a Con if the grease tray is not cleaned frequently enough.
A grease fire is a serious business, and should be avoided where possible with proper cleaning

As the flames travel through the grease collector, if the grease collector is not cleaned frequently enough, it can eventually lead to a grease fire, which you want to avoid, trust me.

My Final Thoughts On The Pit Boss Savannah Onyx Edition

For just under 600 dollars, you cannot currently get a larger pellet grill/smoker than the Pit Boss Savannah Onyx Edition. Furthermore, it features good temperature control (PID) and good smoke adjustment (P-Setting).

Regarding the omission of WiFi connectivity, I do find it a bit odd, as I’ve stated above. However, if you were mainly using the Savannah as a grill instead of a smoker, WiFi/App support is pretty pointless.

Is the Savannah the best pellet grill under $600? Potentially, but it all depends on the features you need really. Therefore, tap/click the link below to find the best pellet grill to suit your needs.
