Pros & Cons – Traeger Pro 34

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

The Pro 34 is the bigger brother to the Pro 22, two models from the original Traeger Pro Series, which are still on the market today nearly eight years after they initially launched. Therefore, as you can imagine, the specifications of the Pro 34 are not exactly market-leading. So let’s review its Pros & Cons against current market competition.

The Pro 34 currently retails for just under $700, which definitely makes it one of the cheapest Traeger pellet grills/smokers on sale today. Especially when it comes to full-sized BBQs.

With a price point just under $700, the Pro 34 is unquestionably one of the cheapest Traeger models currently on sale.
If you really, really have to own a Traeger, then when it comes to full-sized grills, the Pro 34 is one of the cheapest models currently on sale

If you browse our database, and you look at the prices of the latest Traeger pellet grills/smokers, you will see prices between a thousand and close to four thousand dollars.

Therefore, by comparison, the Pro 34 is indeed one of the cheaper Traeger models you can buy today. Now, whether its the best option for the money is another question…

As I’ve stated above, the Pro 34 is a pretty old design at this point, at nearly eight years old. Therefore, when it comes to tech and features it really does struggle to compete.

The Traeger Pro 34 struggles to compete with its immediate competition at its respective price point.
For similar money that the Traeger Pro 34 demands, there are several pellet grills/smokers with much better features

Now, I’ve just used the image of the Pit Boss Competition Series 1250 as an example to illustrate this point, but as you can see from our database, there are lots of options at the $700 price point.

Therefore, while the Traeger Pro 34 is by no means a ‘bad’ pellet grill/smoker. Compared to its immediate competition for a new purchase today, it struggles to compete.

Whenever you purchase any product, and a pellet grill/smoker is no exception, you’ll want to think about what will happen outside of the warranty period when things go wrong.

Well, as the Traeger Pro 34 has been on the market for many years at this point, its very easy to find official and unofficial components to repair any issue.

It's easy to find cheap and readily available repair parts online for the Traeger Pro 34.

For instance, eventually the burn pot on a pellet grill/smoker burns through and needs to be replaced. I know I can easily find multiple retailers of burn pots for the Traeger Pro 34.

Likewise, for the temperature controller on the Traeger Pro 34, there are multiple outlets that have new controllers for sale for a relatively easy replacement.

The temperature controller on the Traeger Pro 34 works to hold a roughly accurate temperature, but you will see swings of roughly 25 degrees either side of the set temperature.

Older generation pellet grill/smoker controllers are little more than a timer. In other words, to achieve a set temperature, it will operate the pellet feed auger for a set amount of time, at set time intervals.

The controller on the Traeger Pro 34 is pretty basic compared to modern standards.
The wide temperature swings with the Traeger Pro 34 controller are to be expected

The problem is, in the real world, there are ambient temperature changes, also known as weather. As such, how accurately the controller can regulate the temperature varies.

That’s why more modern pellet grills/smokers use what’s called a PID controller, which is constantly monitoring and adjusting the pellet feed rate to achieve a set temperature.

Now, while my comments above on the temperature accuracy of the Traeger Pro 34 controller are a Con, those temperature swings can actually be a Pro as well.

The Traeger Pro 34 is actually pretty good when it comes to smoke production.
The Pro 34 is actually pretty good at producing smoke

You see, to get a pellet grill/smoker to actually produce smoke, you need the pellet fire to smolder. Hence, you need it to be inefficient at times to produce more smoke.

The temperature controller on the Traeger Pro 34 will max out at 450 degrees and it also features pretty thin wire racks, therefore grilling performance is subpar.

The Traeger Pro 34 is a much better pellet smoker than it is a pellet grill.
The Pro 34 is a better pellet smoker than it is a pellet grill

Now, the grilling performance of the Traeger Pro 34 can be improved with a set of GrillGrates and some 100% charcoal pellets, but its still not as good as its direct competition for the price.

My Final Thoughts On The Traeger Pro 34

The Pro 34 has been a great selling model for Traeger over the years, and there are many happy Pro 34 out there, just browse Reddit.

The problem is, from the perspective of purchasing a new pellet grill/smoker today, there are just so many other options to choose from. For the price, on every feature, the Traeger Pro 34 struggles to compete against its modern opposition.

As always, don’t just take my word for it, check for yourself. If you tap/click the link below, you can review our database. Set the custom filter to show all pellet grills under $700, and see what you think.
