Pros & Cons – Traeger Timberline 1300

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

The Timberline 1300 is the larger of the two first-generation Timberline models, with the Timberline 850 being the other model. When these pellet grills were first introduced by Traeger in 2017, their features stood out, notably the stainless steel insulated cooking chamber, but the market has moved on. Right, let’s review its Pros & Cons.

Stainless steel means no rust, and it also means you can clean the surface as roughly as you want and you are not going to be damaging any paint/porcelain coating.

The Traeger Timberline 1300 benefits from an insulated cooking chamber that is also lined with stainless steel.
The insulated stainless steel cooking chamber, I would argue, is the Timberline 1300 best feature

The other notable feature of the cooking chamber on the Timberline 1300 is that its fully insulated, that includes the lid, which means more consistent temperatures across the cooking chamber.

While the cooking chamber featuring insulated stainless steel construction is a Pro, it cannot fully justify the price point of just under $1,900 (check our database).

With a price point dangerously close to two thousand dollars the Timberline 1300 does not offer great value for its features.
With a price point near to $2K, there are better pellet grills/smokers on the market

The Timberline 1300 has several weaknesses discussed below, which means it’s hard to justify the price point of this Traeger pellet grill/smoker compared to its immediate competition.

I would argue the second best feature of the Timberline 1300 is the downdraft exhaust design that Traeger included, which has two benefits.

The downdraft exhaust design on the Traeger Timberline 1300 has its benefits with regards to smoke circulation and even temperatures.
Traeger introduced this downdraft exhaust design with their first-generation Ironwood and Timberline models

The first benefit of this chimney design is better smoke circulation within the cooking chamber which will distribute the smoke across all the cooking grates.

The second benefit is that it will also aid with more consistent temperatures across the cooking grates to help avoid hot spots and cold spots to produce more consistent barbeque.

The biggest problem with the Timberline 1300 (beyond its high price) is that it only has a maximum temperature setting of 500 degrees and no direct flame access.

While the Trager Timberline 1300 is pretty good at being a pellet smoker its much weaker at the role of a pellet grill.
If you are depending on the Timberline 1300 as a grill and not just a smoker, you may be disappointed

Using fuel such as 100% charcoal pellets can help the Traeger Timberline 1300 with regard to grilling performance. However, it cannot compete as a pellet grill with many of its direct competitors.

Another benefit of the insulated cooking chamber on the Traeger Timberline 1300 is that it will also make a noticeable difference in reducing pellet consumption, especially in winter.

Reduced pellet usage means a bag of pellets on the Traeger Timberline 1300 will go further an on many other pellet grills.
If you frequently smoke food in the colder months of the year, an insulated cooking chamber can save you a lot of money in pellets

How much money you would save in pellets with an insulated cooking chamber would obviously depend on how often you intended to use your pellet smoker.

Lots of other grills are also vulnerable to rust. However, most of those other grills are not priced close to two thousand dollars, unlike the Timberline 1300.

Unfortunately, stainless steel was only used internally on the cooking chamber of the Timberline 1300.
The exterior of the cooking chamber on the Traeger 1300 is not made from stainless steel like the inside

There are other pellet grills/smokers at this price point or similar that are also painted carbon steel. However, they are either much larger than the Timberline 1300 or they are made in the US, with higher manufacturing costs.

My Final Thoughts On The Traeger Timberline 1300

The Traeger Timberline 1300, like pretty much all Traeger models, is a better pellet smoker than a pellet grill. With a price point this high, its not unreasonable to expect it to be competent at being both.

The Timberline 1300 definitely has good features, like the stainless steel lined insulated cooking chamber and the downdraft exhaust, but I don’t think its enough to truly match its competition.

However, don’t just take my word for it. I would encourage you to use the link below to compare its features against those of similarly priced competitors in our database.
